While her jaw-dropping version of “Let It Go” became the anthem of 2014, Idina Menzel was quietly moving on after separating from husband Taye Diggs, recording a holiday album, headlining a Tony-nominated Broadway show… and panicking about raising her son, just like any mom.

On what inspired her to make Holiday Wishes, an album full of Christmas songs

“To be honest, my love for Christmas came when I started dating Taye. One of my fondest memories of our relationship was how we celebrated Christmas. He has a big family, so we would reserve Christmas Eve for ourselves. I wanted to be the good shiksa girlfriend.”

On how Frozen and John Travolta flubbing her name at the Oscars reset the course of her career

“It’s the best mistake that’s ever happened to me. Just having the kind of success where people might know my name—my real name! It took me a long time to stop chasing it and just embrace it.”

On starting to date again after her divorce

“I’m open to it. I just don’t have a lot of time. They’d have to meet me at, like, midnight after the show, and that’s kind of slutty, isn’t it?”

On being a single mother now and balancing her commitment to Broadway show, If/Then

“The guilt is the thing that we as women all feel, whether we stay at home or we work. There are a lot of double standards with the way the men in our lives see how we make those choices. I think there’s an accounting for how much time I spend with my son, and men don’t have to account for how much time they spend with their child. It hurts to feel that’s a judgment being made. Because we’re already judging ourselves.”

All you have to do is listen to “Let It Go” once to know that Idina Menzel doesn’t hold anything back, which is at least part of the reason why we loved spending time with the musical powerhouse at her cover shoot—it also didn’t hurt that she regaled us with a tale about how she recovered from her most embarrassing moment (spoiler: It involves a wardrobe malfunction) and taught us how to sing in gibberish. When you watch this, you’ll see what we mean.

Idina Menzel to Receive Honors at 2014 Billboard Women in Music Awards

Ariana Grande and Idina Menzel will be two of the honorees at this year’s Billboard Women in Music Awards, joining Taylor Swift as recipients at the Dec. 12 event in New York City.

Grande will receive the 2014 Billboard Rising Star award and Menzel will accept the Breakthrough Artist of the Year award, a new honor at the awards event that’s now in its ninth year. Swift has been previously named the 2014 Billboard Woman of the Year.

Tony Award-winning icon Menzel voiced Elsa in Disney’s massive global hit Frozen, in which she sings the film’s Oscar-winning song “Let It Go” that’s become a new classic in the Disney cartoon canon. With this song, she made history this year as the first singer with both a Billboard Top 10 hit and a Tony Award for acting.

“I’m so honored to receive the Breakthrough Artist Award from Billboard,” said Menzel. “This has definitely been an amazing breakthrough year and I’m thrilled and humbled by it all, including this wonderful award.”

Menzel is currently starring in the Broadway production If/Then and her Christmas album Holiday Wishes debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Holiday Albums chart, at its release last month.

“For Idina Menzel, who has influenced the charts for decades, 2014 was an utterly remarkable year by any measure,” said Min. “We are so proud to be able to give the Breakthrough Artist of the Year award to someone who so richly deserves it, and continues to both surprise and profoundly shape the industry.”

In other news, Idina made the top 5 (#3, to be exact) of the Jewish Daily’s annual Forward50 list which lists the 50 American Jews who have had the most impact on US national story.
Here’s a short excerpt of Idina’s page, you can read more and watch a short video at the Forward50 site.

Sorry, Idina, but we’re not letting go.

From sexy Arendelle-inspired Halloween costumes to Olaf the Snowman cookies, America’s obsession with “Frozen” is alive and well, nearly a year after the film’s theatrical release.

At the heart of the craze is a voice — a powerful, emotional, Jewish voice. It’s a voice that continues to echo through the mouths of the nation, from small children to grandparents.

Idina Menzel’s contribution to 2013 pop culture is undoubtedly her role as Elsa the Snow Queen, who struggles to conquer her power to control snow and ice and use them for good rather than evil.

Her cry to “Let It Go” resonated with a new generation of Disney fans — and yes, more than a few older ones as well.

“Frozen” has so pervaded the collective mindset that it now seems like an obvious hit. But the plot could have been very, very different. Queen Elsa was originally slated as the movie’s villain. But when the producers heard “Let It Go,” they found that it made her too sympathetic. So they rewrote her as the flawed — but heroic — main character.

Menzel loved the change: “To my beautiful surprise, she was never ever the nemesis. She was just this misunderstood, beautiful young woman we could all relate to.
