Idina Menzel ecstatic to be part of Jeter’s final All-Star Game – Interview

Idina Menzel sang the Star-Spangled Banner before Tuesday night’s All-Star Game, also performing Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young” in honor of the All-Star teachers being recognized.
Menzel, the Tony-winning actress from “Wicked” and star of this year’s mega-hit “Frozen,” chatted with the Daily News earlier in the day at Target Field about her All-Star experience.
NYDN: Growing up on Long Island, were you a Yankees or Mets fan?
Menzel: “That’s a tough question. My dad liked to bet on games when I was growing up, so when you have a dad who likes to gamble on games, it’s not about which team is your favorite, it’s about which one covers the spread.”
NYDN: Who were your favorite players?
Menzel: “I loved the whole Reggie Jackson, Lou Piniella and Thurman Munson team That was the team my dad taught me baseball with.”
NYDN: Which of your characters would make the best baseball player?
Menzel: “Probably Elphaba (from Wicked). Well, Elsa (from Frozen) would, too. Anyone that has magic powers. Elphaba would be good, though she might blend in with the lawn. She’s very determined and hard-working.”
NYDN: What drew you to the idea of singing at the All-Star Game?
Menzel: “I’m honored to be invited and asked. To just be here, it didn’t have to draw me. I was here the minute that they asked. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do.”
NYDN: Derek Jeter has been a focal point this week as he plays his final All-Star Game. As a New Yorker, is this exciting for you?
Menzel: “I’m ecstatic. He’s a classy guy. Everyone is sad to see him go.”
NYDN: What does it mean to you to help honor the All-Star teachers?
Menzel: “It’s really extraordinary to be here at the All-Star Game and to have them honoring our teachers. My sister is a second-grade teacher and it’s so important. I have a little 4 ½-year old boy and we don’t (honor teachers) enough. I commend People and Target for honoring them they way they deserve.”
NYDN: What will it be like singing a Dylan song in his home state of Minnesota?
Menzel: “That’s a little intimidating, but I hope he’s OK with it. I took a few liberties.”

Idina to perform at the MLB All-Star game
We can’t promise a stadium sing-along of “Let It Go,” but Idina Menzel will definitely hit it out of the park next Tuesday, July 15, when she performs at the All-Star baseball game in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The Broadway star and Frozen actress will sing the national anthem – and give a pre-game concert – at Target Field, helping to honor the winners of Target, PEOPLE and Major League Baseball’s All-Star Teachers program before the big game.
Joining Menzel in the All-Star Week fun is up-and-comer Aloe Blacc, who will perform “Wake Me Up” and “Can You Do This” prior to the July 14 Home Run Derby. A few days before that, over the course of the weekend, Panic! At the Disco, O.A.R. and Imagine Dragons will entertain fans, too.
The All-Star Game airs at 7:30 p.m. ET on FOX on Tuesday, July 15.
